The Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy – Ministry of Industry and Trade has just published the Vietnam E-commerce White Paper in 2022. Similar to previously published publications, the content of the White Paper is built from the results of surveys of nearly 5,000 consumers and about 10,000 businesses, along with aggregate data from a number of reputable organizations around the world.

Accordingly, the survey results show that the percentage of mobile phone users to access the Internet has increased from 57% in 2020 to 88% in 2021. Meanwhile, the share of desktop/laptop users to access the Internet has dropped from 80% in 2020 to 78% in 2021.

Regarding the average time to access the Internet per day, according to the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, the percentage of users who spend 3-9 hours per day accessing the Internet in 2021 will tend to decrease compared to 2020. Specifically, the percentage of users spending 3-5 hours a day accessing the Internet has decreased from 31% in 2020 to 27% in 2021.

Similarly, the percentage of users spending 5-7 hours a day accessing the Internet will drop to 23% in 2021 from 28% in 2020. Notably, the percentage of users spending more than 9 hours a day accessing the Internet in 2021 tends to increase sharply compared to 2020, from 9% to 22%.

The survey also said that up to 69% of survey respondents answered that they access the Internet for research and study; 61% of Internet users to watch movies, listen to music; 59% access the Internet to shop online…

Also in the 2022 Vietnam E-commerce White Paper, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy said that in 2021, Covid-19 has seriously affected Vietnam’s trade and service activities in particular and global in general. The negative growth of some service industries accounted for a large proportion, reducing the overall growth rate of the service sector and the whole economy. Summarizing the whole year of 2021, Vietnam’s economic growth is only 2.58%, the lowest in the past 30 years.

In that context, Vietnam’s e-commerce still maintains a stable growth rate of 16%, retail revenue reaching 13.7 billion USD in 2021; The proportion of e-commerce retail sales in the total retail sales of consumer goods and services nationwide reached 7%, up 27% over the same period in 2020.
